Meet Lavern Pennant

17 Years in Other People's Kitchens

I started cooking professionally at 21. Luxury hotels first, then resorts, continuing care retirement communities, then the kind of high-volume kitchens that teach you everything about food and nothing about rest. I've cooked for 800-person banquets and intimate four-course dinners. I've trained line cooks who became sous chefs. I've built menus, run inventory, managed budgets, and stood on tile floors longer than most people stand all month.

17 years of that taught me what real cooking looks like, and what it costs.

It costs your back. Your knees. Your feet. Your weekends. Your Sundays with your kids. It costs the dinner you wanted to cook for your own family because you were busy cooking for everyone else.

That's the trade hospitality asks of every chef. And for a long time, I made it.

And Then I Built Something of My Own

Cornerstone Kitchen started in 2021, out of my own kitchen, in Frederick, Maryland. The idea was simple: take everything I learned in luxury kitchens and bring it home. To busy families. To working professionals. To home cooks who want the standards of a fine-dining kitchen without the chaos.

I wanted Cornerstone to be the place where you could find the exact tools I trust, the planners I actually use to feed my family, and the kind of curated essentials that make cooking feel less like a chore and more like the calm part of your day.

Your kitchen should be the cornerstone of your home, not a place that wears you down.

That's the standard I hold every product on this site to. If I won't put it in my own kitchen, I won't sell it in yours.

What You'll Find Here

Cornerstone Kitchen is built around three promises:

  • Curated, not crammed. Every product is hand-selected. No noise, no junk, no "as seen on TV" filler. The tools I trust, the brands I respect.

  • Real-world tested. Everything is stress-tested by a chef who actually uses it. If a knife dulls in three months or a pan warps after one season, you won't find it on this site.

  • Built for life, not Instagram. Beautiful matters. Function matters more. Cornerstone Kitchen is where the two finally meet.

What's Coming

Right now, Cornerstone is both a curated marketplace and a digital meal-planning library. By the end of this year, we'll add the part I'm most excited about: chef-prepared family meals, weekly meal prep, and catering for events in Frederick and the surrounding area.

Once Maryland food licensing is in place, you'll be able to order:

  • Sunday Comfort Dinner Boxes for your family

  • Weekly meal prep packs for busy professionals

  • Catering trays for weddings, work events, and parties

  • Office boxed lunches for your team

Why Now

Because my kids are watching. Because 17 years is enough time spent in someone else's kitchen. Because the women I grew up with, my grandmother, my mother, my aunts, built families and set standards, and never had a brand that reflected what they actually knew about food.

Cornerstone Kitchen is the brand I wish I'd had when I started. The one that takes home cooks seriously. The one that doesn't talk down to busy families. The one that knows the difference between a tool that lasts and a gadget that breaks.

If that sounds like the kind of kitchen you're trying to build — welcome. You're in the right place.

With Much Love,

Lavern
